“We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.”
~Maria Montessori
We Believe:
1. your child’s learning should build on their autonomy, feelings of competence, and connection with others, within a safe and natural environment;
2. motivation to learn can be established through fun and engaging activities;
3. that consistency is essential;
4. that your child has the right to respectfully be themself and advocate for their wants and needs
5. your values as a parent matter
Day to Day ABA with NNC
The Natural Environment
NNC teaches your child skills in their natural environment, through age-appropriate activities, because this provides meaning and purpose to learning. Natural environmental teaching is an engaging instructional design, used within NNC’s applied behavior analysis sessions. Depending on your child’s needs, this may be with a one-on-one behavior tech or in a group setting. When learning within natural settings, your child will be practicing new skills in the environment in which they’ll be applying them. By engaging in activities they enjoy, motivation to interact and learn new skills increases.
Sessions may include things like playing your child’s favorite game or activity, while their behavior tech incorporates instructional goals. Sessions may also include morning routines, eating, toilet training, chores, shopping, riding safely in cars, crossing the street, socializing with peers in the community, and the like. Communication skills and ongoing rapport with your child’s behavior tech occur naturally throughout the session. We teach skills according to where your child is developmentally, across environments and across domains (i.e communication, socialization, independent play & leisure, ability to regulate, safety, and adaptive living skills).
Child-led Activities
With the goal of internal motivation, we encourage child-led activities within the context of safety for self and others. When your child is engaged in learning with their 1:1 behavior tech, they are sharpening their social and communication skills. We recognize that throughout your child’s life, as they interact with the world, they will need to make connections with others and will need to advocate for themselves. Consequently, teaching functional communication (how to communicate effectively) is a top priority.
Self-Regulation Strategies
For behaviors that make learning new skills difficult, inhibit social interaction, and/or create risks for injury to themselves or others, we’ll develop a plan together, for steps that will work in a variety of settings, starting within your home environment. NNC also supports co-treatment services with your child’s other professionals, as needed for behavioral support. Our goal is to address behaviors as they naturally occur.
“PLAY disarms fear, builds connectedness, teaches social skills, teaches competencies for life.”
